What’s up with KPN and Vodafone complaining about people using their services. They sell mobile internet, to me that means I give them packets that they push on to the internet and packets adressed to me are passed on to my device. That’s what they sell, they’ve been doing it for some time. As we all know (and especially they should…) the possibilities of the internet are almost endless.
Email would be an obvious asynchronous way for smartphone users to communicate with one another however we appear to like to be limited to 140 characters (twitter is another good example of this). That all lead to the immense popularity of service like WhatsApp that use you’re data plan (limited or otherwise) to get out of the €327,68 per Mb we pay (T-Mobile NL I-300 plan, the one I’ve got) for textmessaging (SMS). And now these providers must be thinking something along the lines of: “But Apple, Google and Microsoft are taking away our ability to steal from our customers…”.
I hope it won’t be long untill some new provider stands up and offers internet ONLY just shuffling around bits and not doing anything else. Maybe Microsoft is looking forward to this future as well, they did buy Skype afterall…
ps. obviously Apple and Google are prepared as well with FaceTime and Google Voice respectivly.
